To what would you compare Jesus? What comparison could possibly do him justice?

Jesus chose a snake! (John 3:14). And the more you think about snakes in the Old Testament, the more extraordinary it seems!

  • more crafty than any of the wild animals the LORD God had made (Genesis 3:1) …
  • cursed above all the wild animals (Genesis 3:14) …
  • sent by the LORD to inflict his wrath upon his rebellious people (Numbers 21:6) …
  • lifted up so that anyone under this wrath might look at the snake and live (Numbers 21:9)

‘Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the desert, so the Son of man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes in him may have eternal life.’ (John 3:14,15)

Out of all the stories in the Old Testament, why did Jesus choose this one to explain how we can be born again? Why choose a snake to explain his death?
