Why is it that in a gospel about Jesus we immediately jump to asking about ourselves?
In Matthew 4 Jesus has just been declared to be the Son of God, and now is tested as the Son of God. Will Jesus be obedient where the Son of God (the people of Israel) were not? Will Jesus be the obedient Messiah and go to the cross rather than take the short cut to power by worshipping Satan?
Read Matthew 4:1-11 and ask – ‘What does this show me about Jesus?’ and only then ask, ‘what difference does that make for me?’ I think you will see that Matthew is not showing us how to deal with temptation, but that the obedient Son of God gives us hope and help in our time of need (Hebrews 4: 14-16).
